"The greatest weapon you have is that no one really knows you're part of us! Let's keep it that way, shall we?

What's in a planning Post?
As you may have noticed on the application, your character's AU background is completed AFTER applying. This is for a few reasons;

▶ We're here to review your knowledge of your character's CANON life.
▶ We think planning the AU life as a process is meant to be more organic. Sharing ideas with other players and making up AU connections after applications are accepted will mean more opportunities than if everything was planned out before applying.
▶ For each arrival post, there will be an AU family randomization option for those who want to make families on the spot. Great for instant CR!
What's in a name?
Before Awakening, characters may have a name other than the one they have in canon. Eddan itself has a Western, mostly European, feel, so residents' names typically reflect that. NPCs names will be consistent with this.

However, like any city with a large and diverse population, people from all across the world will be found. Because of this, you have your character go by their canon name in their AU life, so long as it makes logical sense. It can be explained with AU family history or by having you character be an exchange students, newly arrived in Eddan. These are both perfectly valid ways to explain why a character doesn't have a 'typical' European name. For those who have simple one word names in canon, there are always ways to work it in - sometimes as a nickname, sometimes as an alias they use.

You are welcome to pick new names and have fun with it! There's no real rule about naming a character, so feel free to play around with sound or significance of meaning however you like!

Being a Citizen
Before Awakening, characters are all full-fledged Eddan citizens. This could be a recent thing (such as someone who came for the school, moved from another country with their family, etc), or they may have lived there since birth, or it may lie somewhere in between. As mentioned in the city page, those who are in the city get a citizen's card that contains all of their information. This is partly why their AU self is so important. If they were suddenly to stop existing, the systems set up by the city would quickly notice something is WRONG.

After Awakening and realizing the truth, their alternate life becomes both a perfect cover-up of what they are doing during the night and a way to 'relax' during the day.

Planning the perfect AU
We welcome pretty much anything that is feasible in a city setting and encourage you to play with your character's canon history either to create parallels to their old life (someone being a musician in their canon being a part-time DJ in Eddan), ironic situations (someone who hates children in canon being a caretaker in Eddan), or even something they had always wanted but never could have (someone who was always alone having a loving family in Eddan).

Because of its size and the fact that it has classes for nearly all ages, the school is a perfect opportunity for anyone wishing to have their character be an exchange student or have their character play out the school life for the first time in their lives. However, you do not have to limit yourself to anything school-related. Characters can be farmers, bus drivers, policemen, chefs, fast-food workers, flower shop owners, and the list goes on.

There are only a few jobs that characters cannot ask for, either for plot purposes or due to the power they wield: the top heads of the government (mayor, some members of city hall), the head of the police and fire departments, and Green Valley's Principal and her three Vice-Principals (although you can be a principal at another school if you'd like!) If you feel that the AU job for your character might be too high-placed, just check with us first during the AU planning post and we'll let you know!

Memories & Feelings
After Awakening, characters will have both their AU and Canon memories. While most should be able to adapt, there are sure to be some bumps along the way, such as accidentally calling someone by their canon name during the day or trying to find an excuse to get out of doing something your AU self loves so that you can go hang out with friends and plan for the night. Part of the fun of Recursion is balancing the day and night life. It's like doing social skills in Persona, but no cat telling you you need to go to bed.

Characters won't suddenly lose their feelings either. Even if you know the person in front of you isn't really your mother, if your character cared for her in their AU life before Awakening, those feelings would continue. How they deal with these feelings and how others cope with it will also be a huge part of the ongoing story-line of the game.
